When we were young, we promoted Conservatism.
I was a young "Black" Conservative, the son of a mother and father who had survived the nightmare of Jim Crow and legally sanctioned racism in their home state. They lives were threatened for simply having the nerve to vote.
But they were always morally conservative and religiously conservative. They passed that onto me and even as they disagreed with my political views, they understood where I was coming from. The point of this debate was that liberals were all about destroying the system. And my argument was that even as the system was unfair, we had made it fairer through sacrifice. And that we could make more changes still. The whole thought of burning down the system when it the only hope we had as a society was just crazy to me. So I could not vote democrat because I felt the direction of the party was towards anarchy. Liberals could only talk freedoms and rights without understanding many of those guarantees were only possible because of the very "system" they hated. Sure it was an obstacle in the past, but in present and in the future, it was the law that granted them those rights and freedoms.
Fast forward to today. These folks are the new "liberals". As they want to overthrow the system because it gave them a result they are unhappy with. And that's why classic Conservatives are parting ways. Because this is the antithesis of Conservatism. Conservatism is all about caution, logic, the law, the system, and the institutions that enable our society to endure. Bill Barr has not changed one political position. But he will not certify the destruction of the political process simply because he did not win this time. He won't blame the system. He will work to convince folks his vision is better than the others out there.
