Not long after the sinking of the Russian Navy's giant flagship.

Seems the Russian military has been exposed as weak.
"Seems the Russian military has been exposed as weak."
Nah. Experts have ALWAYS known how weak they are. And the best news is, China's military is SEVERAL TIMES weaker than this! China's military is inexperienced, and the people hate their government much, MUCH more than Russia hates it's government. This was inevitable, and Putin's overconfidence has gotten the best of him. And IF he tries to deploy nukes, that'll be the end of Russia as we know it. Not even MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), because the US would have no choice but to decimate all of Russia out of self-defense before he could even do it.
Putin has lost, big time. Ukraine should have been the easiest country to take over, if his military wasn't so weak.
The US can't "decimate" Russia because Russia would also decimate it. The US couldn't do that anyway when Putin uses small tactical nukes even if there were no retaliation since nuking an entire country makes you a pariah state (if he uses nukes he won't use anything other than small tactical nukes). Risking the entire country or those of NATO allies for corrupt Ukraine is the height of folly.
@Avicenna
If any country that unfairly started a war like Russia did, decided to use nukes, the rest of the world would stand behind a country like the US, that retaliated against the one that first used them. It'd be self defense basically. That's why it's equally likely Putin wouldn't even use nukes, to begin with, and too many people get overly paranoid about them.
Not if the response isn't proportionate (and what you suggested definitely isn't) and not if it's an escalation into a much larger conflict that causes major damage (it would be).
We've already gotten involved in this to the maximum point we possibly could without inviting direct retaliation. And don't think for one minute that Russia won't take some sort of revenge, if not now than sometime in the future that will get a lot of us killed. Is corrupt Ukraine worth that much to you?
@Avicenna
I'm not the type to let random people get hurt by a bully I could easily put in their place, and sit back and let the bullies do it with some cheap justification like "it's not my problem (for now)." I think it's cowardly as shit to do otherwise, yes. If the US isn't the strongest military might in the world, then what the fuck good is it as a country still? We sure as hell don't have a strong education, tech sector, or industry anymore.
You can't fight every battle. And that very federal government that you want to use to protect Ukraine is bullying the American people via various government agencies, so you aren't engaging paladins to do it. Plus this proxy war is expensive at a time when most people are hurting economically.
I don't know if you know this, but I was a peacekeeper in the Balkans, which was obviously no longer a shooting war when I was there. I know very well the limits of what we can accomplish and what risks we can take.
@Avicenna
Russia is a major threat to the US. So it's not "every battle." It's making sure the major threats to the US - China, Russia, North Korea, Iran - don't get even more powerful than they already are. And you know, the whole "saving innocent civilians who have nothing to do with this conflict" part. If Putin DOES overtake Ukraine, why would he stop there? He'd just keep going. Why would it be smart to let one of the US' major enemies gain so much power? I'm guessing you also feel the US should let China overtake Taiwan like they did Hong Kong.
In all honesty, if I were in charge, I'd be much more aggressive than the US already has been. Then again, if I was in charge, the US wouldn't be as messed up as it is right now, to begin with and we'd have a thriving economy, strong military no one would DARE piss off, no woke BS, and an educated population. And yes, I do know how to get this done and it's all a matter of pointing out where the bodies are hidden and exposing the monsters in power (like Bill Gates and the Clintons) and leveraging their freedom outside of a prison in exchange for doing what I fucking want them to.
You obviously aren't familiar with my posting if you think I don't think Taiwan shouldn't be defended. But given it's important to the semiconductor industry, Taiwan is strategic in a way that Ukraine is not, plus it would be a naval war, unlike Ukraine, Two very different situations especially given that China is by far the biggest threat to the US, and one we barely even try to do something about.
How is Russia such a big threat to the US? Unlike China, they don't own US politicians and business elites, and they don't have China's demographic heft and industrial base, i. e., they do not have the leverage with us that the CCP is. We can deter Russia with our own military power and we are not dependent on Russia for energy.
If our European dependencies can't be bothered to defend themselves against Russia and other threats, why should we? I'm willing to defend them if they properly equip their militaries, but not of they free ride off of us like they have been for almost EIGHT DECADES.
North Korea is a tool of the CCP. We can deter them with our military, like we have been for almost SEVEN DECADES. Nuclear proliferation is a potential issue, but given NK's location, we obviously aren't going to go in there and clean the bullies out. But since you're there (I served in South Korea, too, by the way) on the Korean Peninsula, you know that already. Again, a different containment issue and strategy.
The issues with Iran are nuclear proliferation and state-supported terrorism. Keeping Iran's economy weak is the way to contain them. It would be great to overthrow the bullies there in Iran, but unless you can find a way to get enough people to revolt there, you're not going to displace the bullies, and that's not a country you can invade, either.
That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that most conflicts are not worth fighting. Have we learned nothing from Gulf War II and Afghanistan?
Ukraine is the plaything of the politicians and defense industries. All that money being spent there does nothing for ordinary people. And Putin, who was merely a geopolitical rival we had to contain into an implacable enemy who is now less able to withstand a Chinese takeover of Siberia. What have we gotten out of our support for Ukraine?
What would we get out of war in North Korea, which again would involve the Chinese? Not a damn thing.
War with Iran? Much worse than Iraq and Afghanistan put together. And for what? This is a regime that can be contained as far as we are concerned (other countries have different perspectives). But it sure would not only be bloody but cause a huge rise in energy prices worldwide, especially when Iranian proxies take a swipe at Saudi facilities.
That leaves China. War game simulations of a naval fight for Taiwan show the US losing pretty much every time. Is that a war you really want to fight with supply chains extending so far away from Taiwan and not having trained for the conflict? Of course not. Time to prepare, and to sell Taiwan our best equipment. And don't forget the economic damage of such a conflict- a hammering of the US Treasury market that can only be fixed with mass buying from printed money, aka inflation, supply chains drying up (thanks to foolhardy offshoring of most of our manufacturing base), plus we have depleted a lot of equipment sent to Ukraine and may not have a large enough Navy to withstand an extended conflict.
None of these wars would occur in a vacuum. And as you can see, it's the collateral damage that is particularly worrisome. Should we risk the lives of our servicemembers and our economy to take on bullies we have already deterred? Makes no sense to me.
Ukraine got to take back its country and this is one of the ways they are doing it.
Yes the bridge is a major strategic target opened by putin himself
Thanks for MHO :)
Sorry russia, but when your tanks are stolen by farmers and your "elite" kill squads are killed by armed civvies with basic weapons, yeah, you suck.
The bridge is still standing and in use. All they did was close one lane. You'd get the same disruption with a few traffic cones.
