Because we'd actually like society to move FORWARD, rather than staying forever mired in the mistakes of the past. Freedom of speech, of religion, of the press, meritocracy, due process... these are all very liberal ideas, that met with bitter opposition from conservatives for centuries.

Far more recently, many people claiming to be liberal have rejected all those ideas and calling for their exact opposites; MORE discrimination on the basis of sex, race, and religion, suppression of unapproved speech, and guilt by accusation.
