Because Republicans are increasingly abandoning their traditional idiocies and coming dangerously close to being in touch with reality. Since American politics have degenerated into "standing against what the other guy stands for", rather than having any actual principles, Democrats naturally abandoned the grip on reality that they'd held on to (shakily, I'll admit) for quite some time, and descended into batshit lunacy.

It's a cyclical adaptation to the natural ebb and flow of sociopolitics. Twenty years ago, I was asking exactly the same question about Republicans, who seemed to think the Constitution was an affront to their rights.
