Not uncharted; we've had assassination attempts on presidents and candidates before. In fact they happen far more than you hear about but they are usually thwarted beforehand.

The issue with this one is that the details coming out make it extremely likely that the state police and/or Trump's secret service detail let this happen, either through extreme negligence or internal sabotage. If I were investigating this incident, the first person I would isolate and interview is the Secret Service Sniper who allegedly killed the gunman to find out how he didn't see a shooter on one of the only rooftops in the area, because my initial impression is that he let shots get fired before taking action. Then I'd talk to the state police who were told about a suspicious man climbing onto the building and decided to just walk about the base of the building and call it fine without even checking the roof. I'd also go after the leadership of both the police and secret service to find out why they did not provide the assets or personnel to get a proper perimeter.

As for the shooter himself, so far it sounds like he's either a never-Trumper Republican who wanted to prevent him from being the RNC nominee, or one of those false flaggers who registered Republican to vote Haley for the primaries but wouldn't have voted the same way later (apparently he has donated to leftist groups recently). They're going to try and say he acted alone after being radicalized in online forums, which I think is probably an extreme simplification if not an outright lie especially if someone in the security detail was somehow in on it.

@BCA6010. The USSS Sniper had a tough call. I'm sure he observed the shooter on the rooftop, but he wanted to make sure the shooter wasn't a part of the protection team. The USSS sniper likely keyed his radio and queried if they had any assets on that roof top, and before the answer came the shooter opened fire.

It's a big deal for an LEO to shoot at someone, especially these days. The USSS Sniper needed to be sure the shooter was a threat. You can second guess someone all you want but he is human and humans are ALL imperfect.
