Japanese steel maker Nippon Steel is bidding to buy US Steel. The Biden Administration originally wanted to block the deal, claiming it would hurt America. Now, the deal appears to be going forward.

What do you think? Should the US block the deal?

One of the big news stories here is the loss of nearly 3000 jobs at Tata steel, an Indian owned company. It's meant many families are having to leave their town to find work elsewhere. This is the problem with selling companies to foreign countries, regardless of the reasons people will always be bitter that decisions are made thousands of miles away in the boardroom in a foreign country. Too much of the UK is in foreign ownership to the point we could collapse if they pulled out.

If you think how important steel production is to a countries needs it seems illogical to hand it over to foreign powers. The USA was largely able to defeat Japan in ww2 due to it's ability to produce large amounts of steel for armourment. Would that have been possible I'd the company was owned by Japan?

Should all the nations have blocked the US attempts to dominate the world, not only in their economy but also with their invading army?

I'm pro-free trade and think the only reason for the government to get involved in free enterprise either through outright blocking a deal, or instituting tariffs etc should be for national security interests. I don't think the Japanese producing our steel would be a national security issue.
