This was one of several letters he had sent to an acquaintance to be opened at a later date, each one meant to be an "open this one if ____ happens" thing. While I can't say for sure why they didn't release all of them, I have some strong suspicions, the most charitable of which is that they incriminate co-conspirators and they don't want the names made public yet. I think that the actual reason is probably either more sinister or embarrassing.

It should be kept in mind however that this is the same DOJ that tried to bury the Nashville school shooter's manifesto "in fear of copycats," but they apparently thought it was fine to selectively release this guy's bounty on the president's head while also internally promote the people responsible for the security detail's string of failures rather than firing them. They are also doing this on the heels of at least the fourth known assassination attempt, the second of which got thwarted in the act, while also claiming to know about at least five other active threats including some from foreign countries.

All of that said, my opinion is that (par for the course), the government is handling this in a mind-numbingly stupid way that doesn't make any sense unless you factor in gross incompetence or malice.

No One especially public servants, political candidates, and Presidential figures shall be justifiably a target of political violence. If it can be proven that he wrote this letter, not someone else as a fake, then the illegal gun charges against him (by the feds) will be appended to include threats against a former president, which is a class 1 federal felony. When found guilty, his jail time will increase substantially.

The sad thing is, some wacko will believe this letter, and try to "complete the job". Enhanced Secret Service and private protection for Trump is sorely needed now.
