A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.

It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November.

The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact.

The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.

So who's in charge of protecting the Amazon Rainforest? Personally I think that someone is in charge of preserving it, but money talks or they wouldn't be allowed to even touch the rainforest since it is protected for preservation.

I used to live feet away from a Green Belt in Tennessee owned by our American government. I am guessing it's the honor system that if you know that you are trespassing on a Green Belt owned by the American government and you get caught poaching the deer, you will be put in jail.

I used to get the poachers in my backyard and I could hear their footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves that were very dry and would make noise if you walked on them.

These poachers were just feet away from my bedroom and I would call the authorities on them and they would get hauled away to the hoosegow!!

Seems to me we have more than enough troubles of our own right here in the US. This road seems to be the problem for the people of Brazil which I am sure they can handle without our interference, especially with this Nomad group of Thugs running our country at the moment.

Our last administration leadership spent billions of our taxpayer dollars on preventing climate change. Now those same world wide Hypocrites want to destroy more of the planet’s carbon reducing plants. So they can have a wonderful vacation at the world’s expense!

From a oxygen/carbon dioxide balance point of view? No. The rain forest is a balanced ecosystem. It generates as much oxygen as it uses and consumes as much carbon dioxide as it produces. It's not like we depend on it for the air we breath or to scrub pollution from factories. That said the rain forest is a beautiful place, thus it has tourism value. The rain forest is also highly diverse in both flora and fauna, thus it is a great research location to understand genetics and natural products chemistry. In life's arms race various plants and animals adapt and evolve a myriad of chemical compounds that assist in their survival that can be useful to human technological progress in pharmacology and material sciences. So it would be foolish of humans to destroy such a treasure trove of biochemistry. The COP30 will try to use it as a propaganda tool to gain money and power in their "climate change" narrative, but in reality the great equalizer for the carbon dioxide to oxygen balance is really the cyanobacteria in the oceans that utilize minerals which up well from the ocean floor and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to carry out photosynthesis. The ocean is the great chemical buffer of planet Earth.

It's an 8-mile long road. The rain forest is 2.3 million square miles. I think it will survive.
