What was the atmosphere in NYC and across the US the day after 9/11?

I was born after 9/11 and I have heard and seen pictures and footage of the attacks. but what was the attitude and energy like the day after 9/11, especially at or near NYC?

I wasn't near NYC, so I can't say what it was like there, but in my area (the Midwest) it was honestly like time stood still.

The day immediately after was like a collective hush fell over the country, sort of as if everyone was holding their breath the entire time. We were still watching the news, learning additional information about what happened, hearing about the relief efforts & cleanup crews.

No planes were flying, everything was grounded. It felt as if nobody was even moving around outside. A lot of businesses were closed. It was just a very still, very solemn day. There was a tone shift, as if everything died, and was waiting to restart.

The world was never really the same, afterwards. The 90's were over, the safe bubble was popped, and it felt like the start of a new era, which it really kind of was. There's a distinct feeling of the world before 9/11 & after 9/11. It's pretty much sucked ever since.
