It always depends on the specifics but more often than not it means he is done. If continued correspondence is your goal the most important thing you can do is exactly what he said. Don’t message him. That will pretty much guarantee he will not message you back. Give him all the time he wants. If he wants to talk he will let you know.

I'd take it literally, in that he does not want to see a message come in from you again.

Whether he is blowing off steam and will sort his crap out later or not, the ball is then in his court to contact you... That is unless you don't want him to.
