His response was a mature one.
Not all breakups need to be bad, harsh or toxic.
There are times when both people just know despite still appreciating each others they are not meant to be together. There are times when people break up realizing both of them are actually wonderful people who just happens not to be wonderful together. You need not be so upright and besides you broke up with him so drop the issue and move on.

Well yeah, it shows that the relationship made a positive impact on him, even if it had to end, and it's better than being angry or bitter and saying something hurtful. In my opinion anyway.
