I wrote to my depressed ex not to ghost me and he said" I try to take a step back and think about myself to get better". What does he mean?

I think he is saying that if he takes a step back away from you or whatever relationship you have or have had with him and focuses on himself he doesn't consider it ghosting. Like you might call it ghosting, because he's suddenly just not talking to you at all with no warning, but to him he's just working on himself. Whether you are right or he is right is impossible to say to anybody not in your situation, but he is your ex after all you can let him go and focus more on the people you'll meet in the future

Maybe the best thing for him would be not to be with you. If he has to distance himself from you to get better on his own, that means that when he's with you he's not getting better. This isn't your fault, it's his fault because he hasn't figured out how to deal or cope with his problem well enough to be with anybody, and I think that's a clear sign the both of you should move on try to find happiness with other people. Just because you had good times in the past doesn't mean they're the only person you can have a good time with
