Let him work it out then sit him down and discuss future occurrences and how to resolve them when it comes to YOUR relationship. If he is jus going to be distant and cause chaos in your relationship then that's not healthy for you.. maybe he should be alone and single and deal with the consequences that has occurred before you.

Later these kids one day grow up and may think their father never was there in their father.
