I broke up with him almost nine months ago. I was in love with him but lying and disappearing acting cold on his behalf became too much. He told me he was sad when I ended it.

Just very recently he came back. I decided to give him a chance. We spent on week talking and then the whole weekend together.

On Monday he started acting cold and told me he can't give me anything other than casual friends.

I am shocked and in disbelief. Is this what happens when you give people benefit of the doubt and a second chance?

It speaks more about the kind of person you are and not a lot of people in this life give others second chances. No, I don't believe that second chances can't happen. It depends on the people.
But I would say, knowing his behavior, the best thing would have been to wait before taking him back fully and observe how he acts and to see if he had changed since you were last together. Not to jump back into anything so quickly.

That's called being shallow, his ego couldn't accept the fact that you broke up with him so he did this, that's my assumption, he's just making himself look bad tho, at least now you can focus on finding an actual man

That sucks, but it should be far from shocking. People don’t change overnight, not in a couple weeks or even a few months. It takes real time and dedication, which I highly doubt he did any work to do in your time apart. Unfortunately you fell into the trap this time, but all you can do now is learn from this and never give him a chance to do this to you again. It’s hard to be strong and let go but with shit like this it’s necessary.
