It's not that simple.
Don't try to distill complex things down into easy rules.
Someone being in your life, and then suddenly being gone from it, hurts. Very deeply, sometimes.
No, I am friends with all my exes except one. We talked to each other all the time and have been doing it for many years. I don't see what is so hard with staying friends with someone you were once close to. If you don't, it doesn't say much about the quality of your relationships.
