Why did my ex say he ‘feels bad’ for me and act like he’d hug me?

Me and my ex we're both at our local county fair. We broke up about a week ago. I walked by him and his friends and his friends were saying "that's her" and pointing at me. I passed them again and touched my ex on the back and said you are such a chicken shit. We then talked for a minute or two and it looked like he was upset and about to cry. As we were done talking he put one of his arms around me and tapped my back almost as if he were about to hug me. I asked why he did that and he said, "I feel bad for you."

Well, what do you think a reason for that would be? Maybe something within the relationship, or in regards to how things ended?
