Long-term affair for sure. At least with a one night stand, and we are assuming you are single, the one night stand didn't make any promises of loyalty of commitment. Marriages are pretty damn official in those terms. Long-term affairs infringe upon marriage which should only happen between two people. Sounds lame or boring to some but only they are lame or boring really. Helps to prevent some real problems too. Hell, don't cheat at all. Ever!

With a long-term affair, she would be making a clear and concious choice. She would be lying to me, my friends, my family, and (if we had any) our children.

A one night stand, maybe. The only way I could really forgive even that is if someone slipped a date-rape drug into her drink because then it would not have been her choice. You can choose how much alcohol to drink and go beyond your limits.

Both are bad, but I think if my partner were to have a longterm affair, that would be far more hurtful than a one night stand. Although neither are acceptable, a one night stand is one temporary lapse in judgement, whereas an affair is calculated and long term.
