Why does he contact me every few months?

My ex and I are in our 20's and I'm confused about his behavior. We have been broken up since 2006. He recently contacted me through text a few weeks ago. It was the how are you what are you up to like ten text message conversation. I told him that if he wanted to chat just call me, he said ok and that it was nice to be in contact with me again, so I left it at that. Well the last time I actually heard his voice was in november and I informed him that I was out to eat with my boyfriend at the time, he said can I call you later and I said yeah sure...he never did. It's like when we do talk it's rarely, like every few months, I don't know if any of the information I provided was any use but I just don't understand his motive. I called him out on it like a year ago and he apologized but yet still does it. I don't understand cause we are not even what you would consider friends more like acquaintances. I know that he does this to at least one other girl...
