Ex boyfriend still contacts me every few months?

My ex boyfriend and I dated on an off for about a year our senior year of college. After graduation we decided to go our separate ways and ended it for good. He started dating someone a few months later (who was similar to my personality and looks) but he also would text me random things like links to an inside joke and the occasional how are you.(They no longer date. ) I noticed ever since we broke things off he will initiate contact and text me every few months which is the usual how are you doing and whats new if your life. I moved to a different state and don't have a Facebook anymore so I guess I'm like this complete mystery. Usually the conversations don't last too long and I always think it will be the last time he will contact me but low and behold he will pop up again. It's been almost 2 years since we dated and saw each other and he's still doing this. Recently he contacted me again via text but this time unlike the short catching up we've been texting every day. I want to know why he's still doing this but am too afraid to ask. Does he want to be friends? Does he miss me? Is he stringing me along?
