Why does he pause while making out?

I've started dating this guy, and I've observed while making out him with him by my car or in my car after the evening, he'll take pauses. He'll stop kissing or doing anything and just breathe heavy, while we're forehead to forehead usually. And he'll be looking at me.

I take it, he was just heavily aroused and needed to stop himself from taking it further (we haven't had sex yet)...
