Actually, it is instinctive. This may sound sexist but but men deep down inside have an instinctive urge (after having sex) to protect women and their ability to maintain the home and raise kids. All of our science and technology originated with that desire to prevent things in nature from killing us. Science enables us to understand the world and to predict it and technology exists to help protect us from those threats in nature such as bad weather or predators or competing tribes or animals. Back to women though, with rare exception, when a female is in distress, it is natural for us to assist (and hopefully subconsciously think we might be rewarded with sex).

If I think she's being treated unfairly and she's trying to stop that but is unsuccessful. I will protect any girl that's in this situation, but only if she's trying to get out of it, if she's not trying then I do nothing; if she doesn't even try to protect herself, why should I do it for her? I like girls that are strong and stand up for themselves.
Obviously, she's being physically attacked, I will help her asap.

I think guys are protective in general; I've seen guys get protective over their friends, their moms, their sisters, stuff like that.

I like to protect just about any girl :p and umm the first thing I notice is her style.. her body language.. then after talking with her I might or might not like her. i like a girl who is nice, kind and smiles a lot.(for some reason the smile factor is a big one for me lol) and also lookswsie she have to be skinny, athletic or medium not overweight. and to be honest I believe anyone can become more attractive with good style :)
