I am going to mention some reasons:
- Trust issues which can lead in way too many arguments.
- You can't exactly prove that you're telling the truth and they can't prove it as well. You have to trust each other blindly which is insane.
- In the beginning you don't actually know the other person, therefore you fill the spots on your own and you have no one to wake you up from your constructed reality. You create an imaginary person in your head and in the end you feel disappointment because you find out that they are not who you thought they are. That's more difficult to happen if you meet the person in your real life since you can find many ways to persuade yourself that things are not how you create them in your head.
- The majority of people need sexual intimacy and it can be near impossible to achieve that due to the long distance thing.
- Lack of physical intimacy like kissing, hugging and all that other lovey-dovey crap.
- It is unrealistic, especially if you don't live close
