How do I get my boyfriend to realize I want a promise ring?

So my boyfriend and I have been committed to each other for about 7 months but had the title of girlfriend boyfriend for about 3 months. He's leaving for college in a few months and I really want a promise ring. I just kinda want that commitment locked. I've been trying to drop hints but it has been very unsuccessful so far. Any tips as to how I continue with this?
