I'm an introvert and very shy. I don't feel comfortable going up to anyone I don't know and starting conversations (unless its buying groceries, ordering dinner, etc). There's a guy I like at my gym and I think he might feel the same way (I've seen him watching me, sometimes he works out near me, although other times he's avoided me - mixed signals). Hseems outgoing with people he apparently knows, but otherwise seems to stick to himself. We've never spoken and whenever he comes near me he often looks away or down at the floor. He'll watch me from a farther distance (and once closer when he had a buddy with him).
I'm unsure how to approach him since I'm so shy myself and aren't sure whether or not he likes me. I don't want to be too forward and just waltz up to him and tell him I like him or give him my number and perhaps make him uncomfortable (not to mention me). I'd like something natural, but as I said, he always averts his eyes away, so I feel kind of awkward speaking to him if he's not even going to look at me. I had every intention of saying something to him today when he came and used the elliptical next to me, but he put headphones in (his usual) so I didn't want to bother him. I was going to say something when he got off, but when he did, he exited off the far end farthest away from me. I'm soft spoken, and unless I really raised my voice I don't think he would have heard me. I just can't catch a break with this guy. How should I go about approaching him?
He seems to like sports, one team in particular, and I'm in sports memorabilia, so I think it would be a natural conversation starter that I can have an intelligent conversation about even though I'm not necessarily a big sports fan, but I don't want to be perceived as "one of the guys". Today, I heard him talking with someone else about a knee injury. I too have had knee injuries, and thought that might be another topic - ask him what doctor he goes to or something. But I'm not sure. Ideas here?
