Yes, he certainly can. Someone else might find her ugly, but maybe he finds her attractive (standards of beauty and ugliness can vary greatly around the world). Or maybe he likes her for reasons other than her appearance, which seems to me to be a more genuine basis for love anyway.

Perhaps they share an intellectual curiosity, other personal interests, perhaps they are colleagues or in the same industry, or have some other connection that binds them.

The older you get, the less attraction is about looks.
