Find out what he likes. Take an interest in it even just a little and try to learn more. Ask him to teach you if you can.
Its a long shot but, in my case when girls wanted me to care for them they usually tell me about their backstory. That way he'll be starting to see you as someone more than just a random person. Hope this helps.
