Firstly, the opinions of the two guys here makes no sense. They just talking about a stereotype or it may be true even. I don't know but it has no connection whatsoever.
Getting back to the question, I will give a response based on a situation I was in recently. It's the ego that is at play here. He is a kind and compassionate guy except for that one aspect ie relationship. For all guys, it's the ego that functions their love life. So based on the situation, his ego feels that your beneath him. And when he did reject you, he felt a kind of satisfaction and ego gratification, hence I believe he rubbed it in your face.
I hope I have conveyed my view point in an understandable way.

If he was really that nice, he wouldn't have made fun of you like that. Just because someone claims to be nice, sweet, compassionate... doesn't mean they are. Use that as a lesson and move on.
Probably because he is an asshole, and trust me compassionate person would never do it its obvious he was pretending, thats just something people do.
