Why did he act like he liked me, rejected me and then was really mean to me?

This guy would act like he liked me, constantly tell me that I was different to the other girls we know and when talking about one of the girls he didn't like, he said 'it wasn't that I didn't like her at first, it was just that I thought she was the complete opposite to you'. He has told me many things like that before and would always treat me differently from everyone else. We were super close. I told him how I felt to bring all of this to an end as the constant overthinking and overanalysing was getting to me. We had an argument a few months ago where people kept asking him what was going on between us and he flipped. Everything thing he had ever told me (basically the flirting) now became the exact opposite and every time that we had spent alone together had become 'awkward' and 'uncomfortable' - despite telling me many times that he was grateful for my company and that he wouldn't have done these things with just anyone. He calmed down after a while and then we went back to normal. Now, after being honest about how I feel, he rejected me (he's been told that he led me on and has given mixed signals). At first, he didn't know what to do but was nice to me. Then he became mean but slowly started to open up and become nicer to me again. I kept my distance from him so this was all his doing. Then suddenly he started to become extremely rude, he shouted at me and accused me of being manipulative and said many hurtful things. Even to other people he's saying and doing different things - he's told friends that he doesn't care, but then is talking to them a lot about the situation. I'm so confused and quite hurt by his reaction, especially considering we were so close. One of his friends told me that he has never been in a relationship and has very little experience at all with things like this so he doesn't quite know how to deal with it, but the constant change of attitude is getting me down.

While reading what you wrote, the same thought came to me multiple times:
There might be just something external that is not just between you and him that is moving him. It could be anything, i do not want to speculate about what it could be but i think chances are good that he tries to protect you from something or he got some kind of pressure...

Seems like this dude is in love with temporary love. Then again being completely honest you seem like the clingy type and that gets to some guys to the point they don’t want to be with you. And what I meant by temporary love is that one day he may want to be with you all day and the next he may just want to be with himself and talk to no one.
