It can be many things
1. He sensed that you want to friendzone him so he calls you a friend you first
2. He fought you are not interested so calls you a friend so he can avoid losing you
3. He dates multiple people and you are not a priority
4. He can't love you
I would go no contact and ask for explanations when he showed up if he doesn't show up consider he is not interested.
