What does it mean when a guy calls you sassy?

We were texting and we had a bit off banter going on. And at one point he simply sent me the emoji with the slanted face. When I inquired as to what the face was for, he replied "So much sass haha".

Now I have been told that the words "sass" and "sassy" are typically used flirtatiously, is this true? Why would a guy use the word "sass"?
