What does it mean when a guy says he's "marking his territory"?

My boyfriend of 4 months gave me the flu, and while joking about it, he said "I was marking my territory." It raised a huge red flag for me but I'm scared I'm simply overreacting, especially since he said it in a joking manner. Still, it made me quite uncomfortable. It made me feel like he was calling me property. Any thoughts?

It seems like just a joke to me. BUT even if he meant it to be a joke and you were uncomfortable with it. You have the right to be and should talk to him about it so that he can refrain from making those types of jokes.

He was for sure calling you property, but it's up to you to decide if he was joking or not. It isn't red flag worth on its own, necessarily.
