Am I racist or is this just my preference?

I am not attracted to men who are of my own race. (I am African American and prefer white men.) My friend likes me, who is my race and I’m not attracted to him. Because of this, he said I am racist. My question is, is my not liking someone of my own race meaning I am racist or is this just preference?

It's not usually racism to not date a race you're into it, but I do think it's prejudiced and pretty closed-minded. I myself am not usually attracted to the type of skinny, flat chested, short statured bodies most Asian women have, but since not ALL Asian women are like that, I'd never say never...

I understand where your friend is coming from.
Your preference is based on race. Strictly race.
Therefore, he feels he is not good enough because of how he was born.

However, this is a preference but is it one that is seen as so all across the board? Meaning, Would you be accepting of men of other races not being interested in you strictly based on your race? Would you want them to tell you that?

Maybe, this is a preference you don't need to tell the people who are interested in you but do not fit your desires. Maybe it is better to just say I'm not interested because I have no interest in you that goes deeper than friends. It's unnecessary to say it is because you are not (whatever preferred) race.

Everyone has preferences. However, African slaves were brought to this country in chains 400 years ago and were treated like animals and owned as property.

White slavers called Africans inferior in intelligence and ugly: similar to monkeys/chimps/gorillas.

This country's roots are racist and they've influenced every group who lives here to BE racist, even against themselves.

It won't necessarily do you well to have this preference if it's unlikely you'll meet and have lasting relationships with white men who were raised to believe they are superior to you. You'll have to be very careful if their friends and family have problems because of your skin color, or make assumptions about you before they know you. Bias and racism exist everywhere in the U. S.

I will say this, though- I am a bit mystified when someone isn't attracted to members of their own race at all, but is attracted to other races.

It depends on your motives, not that a preference exists whatsoever. But if your reasons for not liking your own ethnicity is because you think that "all black men are inherently *insert negative view*" then it's racist. But if it's a simple matter of attraction, no.

It depends why you don't like them. If you don't like them because you think that they are low-down no-good and shiftless then it might be called racism (even if it were true). If you just aren't attracted to them physically then it is not racist. Either one is fine because it is your choice, no one else's
