1) Why do they flirt/have feelings for another guy?
Because the guy they're with doesn't stoke their sexual arousal like the other guy she's attracted to. Maybe he's better looking. Maybe he's more exciting. Maybe he's higher status. Hard to say, but she's attracted to him nonetheless.
2) If they have such strong crushes why not leave the boyfriend?
Because women have a strong fear of abandonment. It's why some stay in bad relationships or are never single for very long. They won't break up with their boyfriends because they provide something that their crushes might not - commitment and relationship security. Never let go of one branch until you're securely onto the next one. Otherwise, you fall face first with nothing.
3) Why live with boyfriend and think about another dude half the time?
Because of hypergamy. Some women are always looking for that next branch.

One time I had a girl tell me I was cute and her boyfriend was standing right next to her looking at me!

I’ve seen this behavior most recently displayed by someone having marital issues. She’s noticed a decrease in her husband’s interest in her, knows he’s cheated in the past, and makes excuses not to be around. At the same time another man has been showing interest in her and flirting and she’s been playing along. I know she feels guilty, but her ego is so hurt by her husband that the attention feels too good for her to resist. It’s proof that she still has value to someone. I’m not saying I approve, because I don’t, but I do understand.
I've had little crushes on guys whilst with my boyfriend but I've always kept my distance from them and fought my thoughts on them. I love my boyfriend more than any silly crush. From what iv observed.

Women keep a key chain of men in their life.
Not many will be friends to a man but a Lotta people wanna be friends with women, not true friends mind you.
So she may have 1 guy she's actually sexually attracted to, a guy for protection, a guy she talks about her feels with, a couple guys who do things for her,
I think most or this is subconscious not so much intentional, we call them orbiters.
Most women when they drop their man have 1 or 2 back ups. Maybe not her 1st picks but at least she ain't alone.
If a man is dumb enough to be friend zoned or play nice guy that's on him she's just taking advantage of them.

Most of mine are younger, my age or a good deal older all men. Some married and miserable, some with food marriages being the minority, some getting their girlfriend pregnant and the proverbial gun to their head.
Some smashing and dashing. And me single, at 26 no kids, no stds, no drama, working, planning my life for success best shape of my life and happier every day.
It's called 'hypergamy'. Often, their reasons of getting with their current boyfriend were superficial or ingenuine (like they felt it at that moment and now their feelings changed like the seasons), to begin with. So they continue to compare their current boyfriend to other guys out there. Which goes to show the entire relationship is one-sided at most. They like the idea of getting into relationships, they don't want to actually work for it.
But they do stay with the current dude because 1. It's convenient to benefit from the pros a relationship can bring (most likely a nice guy). 2. They wait until they manage to secure another guy before letting go of their current boyfriend (aka monkeybranching).
This goes to show why so many men don't even bother to date at all. And that there are so many ingenuine relationships out there.

@Asker One of the things, yeah. If things start to get serious and she has the feeling that the second guy isn't just going to ditch her after having fun with her, then she will ditch her current boyfriend.
I've come to believe that some people do this on purpose, they probably get off from the attention and tension.
They employ the fact that they are taken as a boundary for the others- the others know that they are taken and that they can't expect anything from them because of it.
It's kind of a no-strings-attached situation for the cheater (because that's what these people really are in the end), and if the other party crosses the boundary, they can be blamed for it because "they knew they were taken".
I don't think they want to leave their partners, I think they are looking for what is, in their heads, just some "guilt free" fun.
I would say it probably goes deeper than just enjoying attention or they simply like flirting. True, some people (both men and women) simply like the attention or enjoy flirting for superficial reasons.
But, if you dig deeper sometimes you find that they have a level of comfort in the current relationship. It's familiar and safe, but it's no longer exciting. It's vanilla and blah. There is very little unknown and everything is predictable about their current boyfriend.
The crush on the other hand is something unknown. There is a mystery and excitement about them. They are able to flirt and be a little dangerous which fills that desire of wanting some excitement back in their life.
So, on the one hand, they get comfort and safety from their current boyfriend. They get the excitement and the unknown from the crush.

Some cheat, some do this for an ego boost, some have back up plans, some love the attention they get from these guys. I cannot speak for these girls as I wouldn't think of another man if I am in a relationship with one, but observing some I would say they do it because they can and get away with this even when that's awful behavior.
