If you're confused on what I mean let me explain, let's say you and this guy have been dating for a while. You guys started dating when he was 15 and you were 14. He recently had his 18th birthday while you are still 17. Like, do you guys have to break off the relationship until you are 18 or can you guys continue your relationship?

Maybe your confusing dating with sex. It’s not illegal to date anyone of any age, though social norms might result in being seen as weird or perverse if their is a large age gape but forget those haters. It’s illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of consent.

So depending on the laws where they are any sexual relations could of been a crime before and after one of them turned 18. Most US states the age of consent is 16 so a 17 year old and 18 year old would be legal. Some states like California and New York age of consent is 18 so both would be breaking the law the entire time. To add even more confusion there are “Romeo and Juliet” statues in many states that make it legal for two pepper under the age of consent and close in age to have sex legally.

What it boils down to is any non sexual relationship is legal but can get you negative attention from people that disagree with the relationship. Sexual relationships between unmarried people are governed by the age of consent laws of that jurisdiction which vary.

Also realize that people married regardless of age of comet laws can have sex. It’s actually a huge problem since almost every US state still allow underage marriage with parental and/or court approval. While not common there are plenty of cases of girls as young as 10 being married to young men and even adults to get around statutory rape laws.

Check your local laws. In general, in most states the age of consent is 18. That means that under 18 you cannot give consent to sex, so it is considered (statutory) rape. That being said, there are often provisions built into the law to give some leeway for someone a couple years older. All states are different though, so look into your local laws.

There are almost never laws around dating only around sex.

most but not all areas have a "near age exception" that covers near in age partners on each side of the line. California is a standout for having no such exception.
