Women: you should carry a condom with you at all times. You never know. I'm serious. You never know. You could meet someone at a bar while out with your girlfriends and sparks might fly between you and some gorgeous guy who is sitting at a table near you and you end up going home with him that same night. You also never know if an impromptu get together with any man might lead to sex.

This obviously goes for the men too. Always carry a condom, for the same reasons I mentioned above.

So obviously yes, on a first date, have a condom with you as you always should have. You can always use your common sense and discipline to make sure it's the right time, and know when to say no if you just want to take things slow. Having it with you doesn't mean you have to use it. But have it with you anyways just in case you and your partner change your minds.
