Then a week later he said he had to get his phone fixed. I invited him a third time then, and he turned it down. I thought he really didn't want to see me

Personally I wouldn't view your messages as anything to do with romantic interest, like its very platonic and serious or to the point. I doubt he does either, so just be aware that he might not.
