I was on both sides of this situation before. I had to let a girl friend down recently and it really sucked. I was honestly sorry I had to do that, but I knew it was the right thing to do. I did not want to hurt her even more later when the eventual relationship would not work out. And I knew it wouldn't work out. There were several red flags (also on my side and I was aware of them).
When I was on the receiving end it also sucked big time. But from my prospective, an honest reply is always better than slow fades or ghosting. It lets you know exactly where you stand. It may cause some more intensive shock in the begining, but overall you will recover faster. Just move on. Not on to the next one, but on to you. Do your thing, spend time with your hobbies, family, friends,... And don't dwell on thinking 'why?'. Just forget it and if possible, don't hold it against him.

The rest is self-explanatory. Now you can certainly ask him why he feels he can't fully love you, but odds are he will just respond back saying he doesn't feel the same. You were honest with your feelings, and it was great of him to acknowledge that, but being as it went South for you, at this point it is best to not let it get to you, and move on with life.
Maybe he likes you too but doesn't think it's gonna work out cause of distance. Basically yes, it's a nice way of saying it won't work out. I did go through something similar, I confessed my feelings to a friends with benefits but he said something alone the same lines.. so it was really heartbreaking but it is what it is just gotta accept it & move on. One day you will find someone who won't give you this answer and will openly & wholeheartedly want to be with you

He was politely saying he has no "romantic" interest, and it sounds like the "distance" is a reasonably logical way out. But the bottom line is he's not interested enough to attempt overcoming the distance. So now you know, and hopefully you will "un-crush" him now !
He’s not interested and you did right by not dragging it on with your response... He on the other hand, did the total opposite. Drop him and never contact him again.
