It changed the landscape from something to something else.

While before online dating people dated from within their communities and met their SO in a group of friends today any 2 strangers can meet up and start something.

While that increases competition as well as hookups it also increases opportunities for the average person who maybe wasn't the most popular at school and would otherwise have ended up settling for the another odd ball who prefers not to stay single.

So i don't think it "ruined" anything, I think it made things harder but more accessible at the same time.

It made instant gratification a thing and of coirse it didn't take long for guys to assume that should apply to sex as well. Having that hope constantly on their mind makes it hard for them to take the idea of a relationship seriously.
