How would you like your friend to ask you out?

I've been friends with this guy for a couple of years and we're comfortable. This guy will probably think it's a casual hang out if I ask him out for lunch or a couple drinks even on 1:1. So unless I tell him bluntly, I'm sure he'll never notice that I have feelings for him. I know he thinks of me as a special friend, and he's mentioned that we click well - but I'm not too sure if he sees me as something more.

Anyone willing to share their experiences getting asked out by a friend? Or asking out a friend?
