They need you to stay away and their mother too. So they can become an proper adult and not a grown kid. They clearly haven't learned how to put up boundaries, that usually happens during the rebellious teen years. You take distance from your parents to stand more on your own. Reaching a point of common respect for each individuality.

They need someone to guide them through life, telling them what they should or shouldn't do. That way, they don't have get held accountable for anything, as they can always blame the "mommy." They feel this will reduce their likelihood of being criticized, though women eventually expect their men to stand on their own two feet and accept responsibility for their choices and the results of those choices.
