Well no man wants to be not needed because it cuts too close to being not wanted, or appreciated. So its kind of messed up to say something like that.

But in your defense my ex wife would put a lot of bull shit about things on me... and I had to tell her that all the things she does is appreciated, but if its that big of a problem for her, that truly there is only really one thing that she does for me that I can not do for myself.

That could be a huge thing because for him that means the relationship is at stage. If you tell a guy you don´t need him, you tell him you´re better off without him. It makes him question you´re relationship and that could lead to the point that he will break up with you anytime soon.
