Just be honest and explain what is going on in your life. If he is really interested in seeing you he will make it happen.

You don't need to tell him how big the debt is, just that you have some and you aren't comfortable yet where you are with it. He may just insist on paying. After all, if he is into you he will want to go out.

Now, I'm all for paying my own way in the beginning, but sometimes circumstances don't allow that, in your case. I really don't think it is going to be as big of an issue as you believe. He really seems to want to go out. I'm sure he will understand.
