Probably there was red flags but you ignored it your gut was telling you something wrong but you stayed there. Now people make mistake everyone do that its wrong to make same mistake again. Learn and grow and take your time to move on. Also maybe he's manipulative type as you mentioned you're very nice so some may use that for their desires. Its not bad to be nice but unfortunately we are in bad time people changed many are users.
