When to join apps after a breakup?

What’s your guys thoughts? If you’ve just went through a rough breakup.. but also somewhat accepting it because you knew it was coming.. how long would you wait before talking to other people? Joining dating apps..

Dating etiquette always says make sure you’ve moved on before putting yourself out there. But isn’t it so that sometimes what it takes to move on over someone is talking to someone else?

I think it depends on the person…


Some people can fully move on and jump into a long term exclusive relationship with someone new within a week. I don’t think that’s the best idea because feelings can reside, but it also depends on the circumstance of the breakup. Like you mentioned, some people knew the breakup was coming sooner or later.


It’s understandable to want to just “test the waters” and dip your toe into dating apps soon after a breakup. A lot of people feel a bit empty after a breakup and want to move on by meeting new people. I don’t suggest it because you could get yourself into a sticky rebound relationship and hurt others. If you choose to meet new people to move on from an ex, make sure you don’t commit and stick with something casual until you are 100% sure you have feelings for the other person.


I usually tell people to join dating apps when they have found peace within themselves, when they are independent, and ready to commit… That might take 3 days, 2 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, or even 5 years after a breakup.

Dating apps are a scam, don’t waste your time. This is coming from someone who was on and off dating apps for several years in my 20s. Trust me I know that some people do have luck, I knew some personally, even went to a wedding for one of them, and those positive stories are what gave me hope that apps weren’t completely pointless. But 9/10 you’re not meeting guys who genuinely want to invest in anything outside of casual, “let’s take it slow” bs that never amounts to anything. I’m in the healthiest, most long term relationship now in my 30s and I didn’t meet him on an app.
