Why do we date backwards?

i’ve been afraid to truly date this person I don’t know if it’s fear of the person or just fear. Apart of me wants to explore that option and a part of me is just unsure.

People prefer to stick to what they know. I often took my first ex back because he was what i was used to. It was extremely toxic and slick stockholm syndromish but I thought I was in love. He was the only guy I was willing to go all the way with. After i finally got out of that situation, i dated some others 2010-2016 and gave no second chances but then fell hardcore for 4 who got second chances. And of course each was just as toxic (one in 2017, one in 2018, two in 2019)... But they werent all cheaters like the first ex (among other things). Like he definitely didn't deserve another chance. Anyways 2020+ I ensured i wouldn't go backwards. Date wise, i have not. But almost date wise... i have. there's two guys who share a lot in common with me so i’m always tempted to give things another go but we’re still not in the same page and they’re not ready for what I’m ready for. So i have to force myself to move forward in hopes i come along someone with similar morals/values/interests who is ready for the things I am

Do you know how people go back to their exes or go back to people that they stated previously in the past why do we do
