Around the time that video came out music was becoming very formulaic and mass-produced. I remember just thinking that she's hot. Nobody cared that she really can't sing that well, and they definitely didn't look for any meaning in the lyrics. It was all about selling a sexy image.

I don’t think a song can have that much impact. As a kid we never knew what we were singing along to or what it meant. I mean…we sang along to the Spice Girls in that same era: if he wants to be my lover he got to get with my friends or he got to give. Doesn’t mean I like to share my man with my friends now. Right? I didn't realize it when it came out either because I was a kid, but it really is so messed up. It definitely made me think when I heard it as an adult. I know there has to be some young adults who paid attention to the lyrics then. If no one really did but still sang along, then society is dumber than I thought.
