Why is my boyfriend always so tense or on edge?

We've been dating for a few months and he always seems to be walking on eggshells whenever we hang out. It's like he's scared to do/say anything, he usually gives one-worded answers and doesn't ask questions about anything, even though I can tell that he wants to. I've already thought that maybe he finds me too loud and intimidating, because I've been told that before. He's introverted and silent so I tried to acts a bit quieter and try to seem less intimidating (?) to make him feel more comfortable around me but it looks like I'm only making it worse. Why does he act like this?

You state that he is an introvert and that would be a petty good reason why he seems to be tense.

It could also be that is is afraid to be recognized when you go out and that he is scared of what others may think if they see him in your company. Without having a serious conversation, you will not be able to find out. What prevents you to ask him and to talk about this topic?

There are multiple reasons why someone acts the way he does. He also may have things that disturb him or that preoccupy him and that would cause him to behave that way.

Communication is the most important part of a relation and you don't seem to communicate much with your boyfriend. Don't just ask things about everything and nothing but target specifically your relationship.
