If someone could afford it, why shouldn't polygamy be legal?

Well for one reason if Polygamy was legal then ever one the in United States would be married for tax reasons.

Married couples file as Married- Jointly or Married Single. If you are not married then you just file as Single- Not married. So married couples can claim a lot more deductions and qualify for larger tax advantages. So if you could marry as many people as you like for example lets say I am married to 2 or 3 women. Then we could all file jointly with 4 Dependents. Or we could file Married but separately, For example say that wife # 1 does not work, #2 makes 40K, #3 makes 20K and I make 40K.

Me and Wife #1 &# 2 could file jointly with three dependents at 80K combined Income. Wife#3 who only makes 20K can file Married but separately. Were as myself, Wife#1 and #2 would break even on taxes... and then you have to account for the children... who would get to claim the children? Say there are three children 4 or 5 kids with 3 different mothers, but we are all married. Wife#2, #1 and myself could claim all 4 children plus ourselves for a total of 7 dependents at 80K a year... so we would get money back at the end of the year as well. So we would make 1000's every year on taxes. Then we could divorce wife #1 that makes no money, and ensure she gets all the kids in the divorce and only asks for the minimum child support if any, and she could go down and file for welfare... and then bring all the food stamps and state support for the children back into the house hold and we would still get out of paying taxes and live on food stamps and keep all our money.

And even though we are married that doesn't mean that we all have to be having sexual relations. I would marry any of my unmarried friends and try to lump as many of us as we could together just for the tax haven. Hell you don't even have to marry women, I would marry my best guy friends as main as we could and if we wanted wife then I could marry their wife as well. You could have three guys, and 6 women all married to the some person, with various properties all living within this tax shelter of a bubble and collecting welfare.

If it’s between consenting adults, who all mutually agree on the aspects of it, then I see no problem with polyamory. The whole idea of one man/one woman is just religious mumbo jumbo anyways. But, I do think there should be protections put in place, because humans tend to be possessive, and can get angry or violent when jealous, which may be an issue in a polyamorous relationship.

It is in there. Old Testament allowed multi wives. Brothers would marry wives of their brothers to rake care of them and children. That changed with New Testament. One is wedding and the union of just two people , a woman and a man , not two men , and not two women.
