Why is Polygamy still illegal?

when lgbt can get married and there is no societal benefit for that, why can't I marry two women for the same reason lgbt argued for getting married (insurance, benefits, legal issues).

Marriage is a religious sacrament, the government only got into marriage licensing to prevent interracial marriages. However, in the interim a new church popped up that everyone hated; mostly because they were popular and pastors were losing their congregants and their tithings. They were ran out of New York and every other subsequent state that they tried to settle in until they reached Missouri. This is where things went from bad to worse. As they were abolishinists now living in a slave state. The local Missourians didn't care much for that and things got rather violent. After a few skirmishes the Governor got involved and sent in the state's militia to arrest all members of the church, confiscate all their property, and execute the leaders. Fortunately for the church, the general in charge recognized that the execution orders were illegal and didn't carry them out. And marched the church back to Illinois. In the insuing legal battles with the state of Missouri, the head of the church was arrested and killed in prison by a mob. This lead to disarray in the church and the church split into 6 churches. The main group led by the former right-hand of the head of the church; who has lost favor due to an investigation of apostasy on his part (specifically teaching and performing polygamy). He moved everyone out to Utah and slowly getting rid of the teachings of the church against polygamy; until enough time had past (40 years) and he instituted as an official church practice. Over this time the church hadn't become any more popular amongst non members. So the US made polygamy illegal to stick it to them. This lead to a lot of legal turmoil and the church even adopted the idea of secret marriages by converting a little known sacrament of sealing (this is where you would seal yourself to family and friends so that you could find each other in the vastness of heaven) and using it as a stand in for second and third marriages. Eventually the church gave up on the practice; with a few splinter groups carrying on with it. Even further on the government gave up on preventing interracial marriages; but kept the licensing process in place just so they didn't give up all the control over marriage. While polygamy remains illegal; the government only really goes after Christian polygamists. As Muslims are allowed to do so without molestation (just look at Obama's father Onyango).

It is quite fine for multiple females to all date the same guy. They are empowered then.

TOTALLY AGREE!! You Should be able to enter into any type of consensual contract with any other human that you want. It's just anachronistic prudishness. Give it another generation or two and hopefully it will be normal.

Because it is "immoral' next we need to ask what is immoral why not include gay anymore.
