Should I go for a relationship with my business associate?

She's 34, divorced, with a kid in joint custody. We talked about having something casual, but keep it hush hush because while we are independent we could get a hit to our reputations.

My opinion is, if you're not really serious about her then do not get into any type of relationship with her, let alone something casual. Now, why do I say this? Well, I believe that doing so might not end up resulting in good things in the future. If it is lust you feel for her or something similar that is characterized by feeling or wanting quick gratification then to me that can primarily lead to failures in the relationship whether casual or not. There are a lot of relationships today that do not end positively and I believe a lot of that is from people not taking the time to decide on whether they are serious with the person and whether the person is right for them. Also, this is further complicated by the fact that you two are business associates. So, I believe if you do not take my advice, things can surely end negatively and make things awkward or worse due to you two being acquainted in the workforce.

I know a lot of people don't think you should have relationships with coworkers. I don't agree. I don't see anything wrong with it. Work is still one of the most common places for couples to meet.

The important thing is that it does not interfere with work. As long as you both remain professional, and can still remain professional if the relationship goes sour, then I don't see a problem with it.

I have done it and I know LOTS of other people who have done it. It's rarely a problem. The worst problem I directly know about was pretty minor and did not affect the company or any other employees.

And yea, keep it discreet. There is no reason to advertise it.
